An Overview of Your Brakes

Your vehicle’s brakes allow you to stop with minimal driving effort. When you press the brake pedal, a level and piston send brake fluid from the master cylinder through the brake lines/hoses to the smaller cylinder at each wheel. The hydraulic pressure moves the brake caliper, which holds the brake pad. The metallic pad contacts the rotor, a larger disc to the inside of the wheel. The friction between the two stops your automobile. Eventually, your vehicle will need brake repair. The most common work we do is brake pad replacement. The metallic pads last a long time, but they eventually wear thin with use. Once they reach the minimum safe thickness, they must be changed. We can keep an eye on your brakes during routine service visits. However, if the pads need attention, you’ll likely also hear a squealing sound during braking. That’s because manufacturers embed tabs designed to issue the warning sound once they become exposed. Another possible sign of trouble is pulling to one side or significantly shaking when applying brakes.

Similarly, your car needs our immediate attention if the brake pedal feels spongy under your foot or seems to sink too far toward the floor. A burning odor could also be related to brakes, especially if a caliper is stuck or the emergency brake has been left engaged. Finally, noticing that stopping under normal conditions takes a greater distance should prompt a visit.
